Artists in Residence 2024: TO GIVE – TO TAKE – TO NEED

This year we are already entering the third and for now final round of our residency program 'TO GIVE–TO TAKE–TO NEED': The program invites choreographers and dancers based in Hamburg to spend two weeks in our studio 'Alte Post' (Hamburg-Altona), open their artistic practice to the public, and allow visitors to participate in their artistic process through an OPEN STUDIO.

We're very happy to introduce the artists in residence 2024:

Residency 1, 17–28 June: Virginia “Aura” Lewerissa will delve into the energy dynamics of Krump, a dance style she’s mastered over twelve years. Krump's powerful exchange of energy, rooted in mutual support and respect, inspires her to explore how we can give, take, and fulfill needs in unexpected moments, considering cultural influences, surroundings, emotions, and personal reflections. Through workshops and open discussions during her residency, she intends to introduce participants to the Krump culture, encouraging them to explore their own giving and receiving dynamics, fostering inner reflection and exchange that is inspired by the residency’s name.

Residency 2, 12–23 August: René*e is a choreographer, performance artist, and dance scholar. In a media choreographic setup, she explores gaze dynamics between the audience and performers. She deepens her engagement with a queer aesthetics of contemporary dance as well as gender performances by trans* and non-binary individuals.

Residency 3, 3–16 October: Sina Saberi is a performer, choreographer and cultural manager from Tehran, based in Hamburg. His practice and research are inspired by his cultural background and revolve around the idea of dance as an alternate state of being. Where can the personal and the public connect and ultimately arrive to a point of togetherness?

The jury, consisting of Jenny Beyer (Dance / Choreography), Verena Reygers (journalist / PR consultant at Kulturhaus Eidelstedt / historian) and Tejan Lamboi (educational consultant and expert on racism criticism, inclusion and process support, e.g. at W3_Werkstatt für internationale Kultur und Politik e.V.), received many great applications from artists who work and position themselves diversely and like to thank all artists that applied.

Tejan Lamboj's statement underscores how challenging the selection process was for the jury: "It was enriching and inspiring to read your creative ideas for the residency. In fact a privilege for being part of the process evaluating them. The so many good ideas made the process of selecting just three a very challenging one. Hopefully you will find other opportunities to realise your ideas. Thank you for being part of this."

The strong response to our call for applications demonstrates the significant need for more spaces and resources for artistic research in Hamburg. This strengthens our resolve to find means to continue and expand our residency program beyond our TANZPAKT funding ending in March 2025 for the time being.

The residencies are part of the three-year-project TO GIVE–TO TAKE–TO NEED, funded by TANZPAKT Stadt-Land-Bund with the support of the German Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media and the Ministry of Culture and Media Hamburg.
